Warning Signs

What are the signs of a heart attack?

It's not always easy to tell if you are having a heart attack because symptoms vary. The symptoms are sometimes similar to those you would experience with angina, but they usually last longer and won't go away.

The most common warning sign of a heart attack is a crushing or squeezing chest pain or a tightness which often starts in the centre of the chest and spreads to the jaw, neck or arms (especially the left). This normally lasts more than 10 minutes and may fluctuate in severity.

You may also experience the following warning signs:

  • An uneven heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Heavy sweating
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Pale or bluish skin, lips or fingernails
  • Loss of consciousness – fainting

If you think you are having a heart attack, seek medical attention immediately. Time is of the essence as the damage from a heart attack may be reduced with proper attention.

If you have any warning signs of a heart attack, CALL 000 for help. After calling, sit up if you are feeling breathless, or lie down if you are feeling faint.

You can take steps to help prevent a heart attack by looking ahead and making smart choices about things such as your diet and exercise habits. If you have already suffered a heart attack, you may be able to prevent a second one and improve your quality of life. The rehabilitation process is very important.

What are the signs of a stroke?

If you are having a stroke, you may experience:

  • Weakness or paralysis of part of your body
  • Difficulty speaking or seeing.
  • Other mental or physical problems.

These symptoms may be temporary or they may be permanent. In any event, you should get medical attention immediately.
