A few facts about heart attacks

  • Cardiovascular disease is a term used to describe heart, stroke and blood vessel diseases. It is the leading cause of death in Australia.
  • In Australia, cardiovascular disease kills one Australian nearly every ten minutes and affects the lives of more than 3.7 million Australians2.
  • The heart is a muscle that pumps blood to all parts of the body. This blood provides your body with essential oxygen and nourishment. A heart attack occurs when one of your coronary arteries becomes mostly or completely blocked. This is usually caused by a blood clot.
  • Your heart is about the size of your clenched fist and is situated in the front and middle of your chest – slightly to the left of your breastbone.
  • Taking a low dose aspirin such as Cartia® can help reduce your risk of having a repeat heart attack.
